For a long time, tans from a bottle were something of a joke.
“Tanning used to smell so bad, look orange, and fade so ugly,” said Erika Vasco, founder of the Tan Edit, a business offering spray tans and self-tanners.
But the booming interest in skin-care in recent years has rubbed off on tanning products, which typically use dihydroxyacetone, an active ingredient known as DHA, that creates brown pigments when it reacts with the keratin protein in the skin’s outer layer.
